Fiber handling specialist Cygnet Texkimp has developed a very heavy duty (VHD) creel capable of handling 500-kilogram PAN precursor fiber packages, helping carbon fiber manufacturers reduce downtime and improve production efficiency.
The new solution was developed through industry collaboration to support growing global carbon fiber production capacity and the increasing demand for high-volume industrial manufacturing.
Larger Fiber Packages Improve Production Efficiency
The VHD creel is designed to unwind polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fiber into carbon fiber production lines.
According to Cygnet Texkimp, carbon fiber manufacturers have relied on fiber packages weighing up to 350 kilograms for more than a decade. Increasing package weight to 500 kilograms allows longer continuous production runs while reducing the number of package changeovers.
The larger bobbins help manufacturers:
- Reduce production downtime
- Increase continuous operating time
- Improve overall line efficiency
- Lower handling frequency
- Enhance manufacturing productivity
Supports Higher Tow Count Carbon Fiber
Beyond handling heavier packages, the new creel is engineered to process larger carbon fiber tows, supporting manufacturers expanding into industrial-grade applications.
The system is compatible with:
- 24K tow carbon fiber
- 48K tow carbon fiber
- Higher line speeds
- Larger PAN precursor bobbins
According to Peter Stevenson, Director of Projects at Cygnet Texkimp, the larger bobbin size delivers immediate efficiency gains while enabling faster production of high-tow-count carbon fiber.
Designed for Growing Industrial Carbon Fiber Demand
Cygnet Texkimp says the new VHD creel was developed in response to sustained global investment in carbon fiber manufacturing, particularly projects focused on establishing domestic production capacity.
The company reports that more than 70 VHD creels are already operating worldwide, collectively processing over 24,000 fiber bobbins.
The technology is intended to support expanding applications in sectors such as:
- Aerospace
- Automotive
- Wind energy
- Defense
- Industrial composites
Electronic Tension Control Ensures Stable Fiber Processing
The VHD creel incorporates an operator-managed lifter loader system for handling the heavy PAN fiber packages, with optional automated loading solutions available for higher-volume facilities.
The system also features an electronic tension control system using a closed-loop dancer arm mechanism to maintain near-constant fiber tension throughout the unwinding process.
Consistent fiber tension is essential for stable carbon fiber production, helping manufacturers maintain product quality while operating at higher speeds.
As global carbon fiber capacity continues to expand, equipment capable of supporting larger precursor packages and higher throughput is expected to play an increasingly important role in improving manufacturing productivity.
