Bizzarrini 5300 Aperta Lusso

Italian performance car manufacturer Bizzarrini has introduced the 5300 Aperta Lusso, an open-top grand touring sports car that combines the company’s historic design language with modern composite engineering.

Inspired by the original 5300 GT developed during the 1960s under founder Giotto Bizzarrini, the new model replaces the coupe’s fixed roof with removable carbon fiber roof panels while retaining the proportions and styling that defined the marque’s early vehicles.

Production will be limited to 10 hand-built vehicles in the initial series, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

Carbon Fiber Structure Reduces Weight While Preserving Rigidity

At the heart of the 5300 Aperta Lusso is a single-piece carbon fiber composite body integrated with a bonded semi-monocoque chassis.

Unlike traditional steel body construction, the composite architecture provides a lightweight structural platform while maintaining the stiffness required for an open-top performance vehicle.

The removable carbon fiber roof panels are engineered to create a sealed interface with the frameless side windows during normal driving. When open-air driving is preferred, the lightweight panels can be removed without tools and stored inside the vehicle.

The extensive use of carbon fiber reflects a broader trend among low-volume performance vehicle manufacturers, where composite structures enable complex body geometries while reducing overall vehicle mass.

Modern Engineering Beneath a Classic Exterior

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter front-mid-mounted V8 producing more than 400 horsepower, driving the rear wheels through a Tremec TKX five-speed manual transmission equipped with a limited-slip differential. Buyers can also specify an optional six-speed manual gearbox.

While the engine architecture pays tribute to the original Bizzarrini powertrain, it incorporates modern electronic port fuel injection, concealed beneath induction components styled to resemble traditional carburetors.

The vehicle also features a handcrafted Inconel exhaust system, combining corrosion resistance with reduced weight compared with conventional stainless-steel exhaust assemblies.

According to the manufacturer, the Aperta Lusso is capable of reaching a top speed of approximately 282 km/h (175 mph).

Chassis Developed for Grand Touring Performance

The chassis employs double wishbone suspension with adjustable Koni dampers, while braking is provided by ventilated disc brakes using Alcon front calipers and Brembo rear calipers.

Electrohydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering aims to balance low-speed maneuverability with steering precision during higher-speed driving.

Inside the cabin, traditional Italian craftsmanship is combined with contemporary amenities. Materials include wood, leather, premium woven fabrics and handcrafted trim, alongside features such as air conditioning, wireless smartphone charging and a modern audio system.

Composite Construction Continues to Transform Limited-Production Sports Cars

Professor’s Analysis

Although carbon fiber composites are often associated with motorsport and hypercars, they are becoming increasingly common in limited-production grand touring vehicles.

For open-top automobiles in particular, structural stiffness becomes a major engineering challenge after removing the fixed roof. Carbon fiber composite monocoque and semi-monocoque structures offer a high stiffness-to-weight ratio, helping engineers recover much of the lost torsional rigidity without introducing significant additional mass.

Beyond weight reduction, composite body construction also allows manufacturers producing small production volumes to manufacture highly complex body panels with fewer tooling constraints than conventional stamped steel.

As boutique automotive manufacturers continue to revive heritage vehicle designs, carbon fiber has become an enabling technology that allows classic styling to meet modern expectations for structural performance, durability and driving dynamics.

Heritage Meets Advanced Composite Manufacturing

The 5300 Aperta Lusso demonstrates how advanced composite engineering can be integrated into vehicles inspired by historic automotive design.

Rather than replicating 1960s construction methods, Bizzarrini has adopted carbon fiber composite structures and modern manufacturing techniques to create a lightweight grand touring platform while preserving the visual identity that established the brand more than six decades ago.

For the composites industry, the project illustrates the continued expansion of carbon fiber beyond motorsport into handcrafted luxury vehicles, where lightweight construction, structural efficiency and design flexibility remain key engineering advantages.
