SHD Composites has introduced CEM101, a new cyanate ester prepreg developed for applications requiring a combination of high service temperature, low dielectric constant, low loss tangent and structural performance.
The material is aimed at demanding applications across the aerospace, space, defense and motorsport sectors, where both thermal stability and electromagnetic properties can influence material selection.
CEM101 builds on SHD Composites’ existing work in cyanate ester prepreg systems and extends its portfolio of materials for high-performance structures.
CEM101 Targets Low Dielectric Performance
One of the central characteristics of CEM101 is its dielectric performance.
SHD has specifically engineered the prepreg for applications requiring minimal dielectric constant and loss tangent, while maintaining the mechanical properties required for structural composite components.
These characteristics are particularly relevant where composite structures interact with radio frequency (RF) signals.
Unlike a material selected primarily for mechanical strength, an RF-oriented composite system may also need to limit its influence on electromagnetic transmission.
CEM101 is therefore positioned as an RF material that combines dielectric characteristics with the structural advantages of fiber-reinforced composites.
Cyanate Ester Chemistry Supports Higher Temperatures
CEM101 also features an improved glass transition temperature (Tg) and enhanced service-temperature capability.
Glass transition temperature is an important consideration for polymer-matrix composites because it relates to the temperature range over which the resin maintains its required structural characteristics.
For aerospace, defense and space applications exposed to elevated temperatures, resin-system selection can therefore become as important as reinforcement selection.
SHD says CEM101 combines this thermal capability with an inherently flame-retardant cyanate ester resin chemistry.
The resulting system brings thermal, dielectric and structural requirements together within one prepreg platform.
Processing Characteristics Remain Part of the Design
Performance after cure is only one part of prepreg development.
Material handling and resin behavior during processing can also affect manufacturing consistency and the quality of the finished laminate.
According to SHD, CEM101 provides suitable handling characteristics together with controlled flow during processing.
This gives composite manufacturers another processing consideration alongside the material’s dielectric, thermal and structural properties when evaluating it for production.
Applications Extend From Space to Motorsport
SHD is targeting CEM101 at several high-performance markets, including aerospace, space, defense and motorsport.
The combination of low dielectric constant, low loss tangent, high service temperature and structural strength is particularly notable for applications where conventional structural prepregs may not provide the required RF characteristics.
Rather than treating electromagnetic performance and structural capability as separate requirements, CEM101 is designed to address both within the composite laminate.
Launch Follows SHD’s North American Expansion
The CEM101 introduction comes as SHD Composites expands its manufacturing presence in the United States.
The company recently announced a new 60,000-square-foot facility in Mooresville, North Carolina, which is expected to quadruple its domestic production capacity in North America.
The combination of new material development and additional manufacturing capacity positions SHD to support growing demand for specialized prepreg systems across aerospace, defense and other high-performance composite markets.
