Rocket Lab Corp. has formally established Rocket Lab Germany GmbH in Munich, expanding its European presence as the company evaluates future satellite, payload and space-component manufacturing in Germany.
The move could ultimately establish Germany as a regional manufacturing hub supporting European satellite constellations while also giving customers access to Rocket Lab’s launch services through its Electron and Neutron rockets.
For the composites industry, the expansion is also notable because both launch vehicles make extensive use of carbon fiber composite structures.
Rocket Lab Builds a Larger European Presence
Rocket Lab is already active in Germany following its acquisition of Munich-based Mynaric AG, a manufacturer of laser optical communications terminals.
Mynaric will continue manufacturing optical terminals and developing future optical communications technologies as part of Rocket Lab. Rocket Lab plans to apply its manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities to increase production scale and efficiency for European and international customers.
The creation of Rocket Lab Germany extends that strategy beyond optical communications.
The company says it is pursuing opportunities that could eventually support manufacturing of:
- Satellites
- Payloads
- Spacecraft components
If these plans move forward, the Munich operation could become part of a broader European supply and production network for constellation-class spacecraft.
Germany Could Become a Satellite Manufacturing Hub
Rocket Lab’s plans arrive as European governments and commercial operators place increasing emphasis on sovereign space capabilities.
Large satellite constellations require a manufacturing model substantially different from traditional low-volume spacecraft programs. Production rate, repeatability, supply-chain capacity and component availability become increasingly important when tens or hundreds of spacecraft must be produced.
Rocket Lab believes its manufacturing experience could address this requirement in Europe.
Founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck said Europe’s space sector is moving toward greater speed, commercial agility and technical sovereignty, while identifying launch access and spacecraft manufacturing capacity as areas where additional capability is needed.
Rocket Lab Germany is intended to address both sides of that equation: spacecraft production and access to launch.
Electron and Neutron Bring Composite Launch Systems Into the Strategy
Rocket Lab Germany will also offer launch services using the company’s Electron and Neutron launch vehicles.
Electron is particularly relevant from a composites manufacturing perspective. Rocket Lab has long used carbon fiber composite structures in the small launch vehicle, including major structural elements.
Neutron extends the company’s composite-intensive approach into a substantially larger reusable launch vehicle.
Carbon fiber composites can provide the combination of low structural mass and mechanical performance required in launch vehicles, where reducing structural weight can provide additional flexibility for payload and vehicle performance.
Rocket Lab’s European expansion therefore connects several parts of the space manufacturing chain — spacecraft, components, optical communications and launch systems.
Rocket Lab Expands Through Acquisitions
The German subsidiary also comes during a broader period of expansion for Rocket Lab.
According to the supplied information, the company agreed in July to an approximately $8 billion merger with Iridium, intended to open additional markets and further expand Rocket Lab’s vertically integrated space capabilities.
Together with Mynaric and the establishment of Rocket Lab Germany, the strategy points toward a company operating across a much wider portion of the space value chain rather than focusing primarily on launch.
That includes launch vehicles, spacecraft manufacturing, satellite components and communications technologies.
European Space Manufacturing Enters a New Phase
The immediate establishment of Rocket Lab Germany does not mean that a large satellite factory has already been confirmed.
Rocket Lab says it is pursuing opportunities that could lead to satellite, payload and component manufacturing in Germany. The distinction is important because specific manufacturing capacity, investment figures, production volumes and timelines have not yet been disclosed.
Nevertheless, establishing a dedicated German entity provides Rocket Lab with a platform from which those capabilities could be developed.
If the planned manufacturing expansion proceeds, Munich could become another important node in Rocket Lab’s increasingly integrated space manufacturing network — connecting European spacecraft and component production with the company’s composite-intensive launch systems.
