Sirmax Group is celebrating 20 years of production at its Kutno site in Poland, a facility that has grown from the Italian compounder’s first international operation into one of its principal European manufacturing hubs.
The Padua-based materials company opened its first Polish plant in 2006 within the Łódź Special Economic Zone. Since then, total investment at the site has exceeded 270 million Polish zloty, equivalent to approximately £70 million.
Employment has increased from 20 to 132 people, while the number of production lines has expanded from two to 16. The Kutno complex now has an installed annual capacity of approximately 85,000 tonnes of thermoplastic compounds.
Kutno Site Expands From Polypropylene to Reinforced Compounds
Sirmax’s initial facility, known as Kutno 1, began as a polypropylene compounding plant.
In 2020, the company added Kutno 2, a second factory focused on high-performance glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic materials. The expansion enabled Sirmax to move beyond standard polypropylene and develop a broader multi-material portfolio for automotive, industrial, construction and electrical applications.
The overall site covers more than 100,000 square meters, including approximately 30,000 square meters of covered production and operating space.
Sirmax produces both unreinforced and fiber-reinforced thermoplastic compounds. Its portfolio includes materials modified with glass fiber and carbon fiber to improve stiffness, strength, dimensional stability and thermal performance.
Reinforced Thermoplastics Support Automotive Applications
The automotive industry is one of the principal markets served by the Kutno operation.
Sirmax compounds are used in exterior components such as bumpers, spoilers and front grilles, as well as structural and under-the-hood parts exposed to mechanical loads and elevated temperatures.
Fiber-reinforced thermoplastics offer manufacturers a combination of relatively short molding cycles, design flexibility and lower component mass compared with many conventional metal solutions.
Glass fiber remains the most widely used reinforcement for high-volume molded components because it provides a practical balance of mechanical performance and cost. Carbon fiber compounds can be applied where greater stiffness or further weight reduction justifies the higher material price.
Recycled Content Becomes a Larger Part of the Portfolio
Sirmax Polska has also expanded its development of compounds containing recycled polymers and materials designed to reduce product carbon footprints.
For compound manufacturers, incorporating recycled feedstock is more complex than simply replacing virgin resin. Variations in contamination, polymer history, moisture and mechanical properties must be controlled to produce a material that behaves consistently during molding and service.
This requires careful formulation, filtration, stabilization and quality testing, particularly when the material is intended for technical or automotive applications.
Sirmax has also introduced simulation and digital production tools to improve component design, process planning and manufacturing performance at the Polish operation.
Production Resilience Strengthens Kutno’s Role
The company said the site maintained production through the COVID-19 pandemic and later adapted its sourcing and operational planning in response to the war in Ukraine and the European energy crisis of 2022.
These events reinforced the strategic value of regional manufacturing capacity and resilient raw-material supply chains.
For European plastics and composites processors, geographically distributed compounding plants can reduce transport distances, shorten lead times and provide greater flexibility when energy, logistics or feedstock markets are disrupted.
Twenty Years Reflect a Broader Shift in Materials Manufacturing
Sirmax’s development in Kutno reflects how thermoplastic compound production has evolved during the past two decades.
The site began with conventional polypropylene materials but now supports reinforced, recycled and application-specific formulations for increasingly demanding markets.
This transition is important for the composites sector. Short-fiber thermoplastic compounds do not provide the same structural performance as continuous-fiber laminates, but they are essential for high-volume applications where injection molding speed, complex geometry and integrated functionality are required.
Their role is particularly significant in automotive production, where engineers must balance weight, cost, recyclability, surface quality and manufacturing cycle time.
Kutno Positioned as Sirmax’s European Platform
Sirmax President and CEO Massimo Pavin described Kutno as one of the group’s most important European industrial centers and said the company intends to strengthen its role in supporting international growth and materials innovation.
The facility has received several regional and industry recognitions, including BASF Polska’s Green Planet 2024 award and Great Place to Work certification in 2025.
As Sirmax enters its third decade of production in Poland, the Kutno site is positioned to support further development of reinforced thermoplastics, recycled compounds and lower-carbon material systems for European manufacturers.
