A leading Chinese automotive manufacturing enterprise consulted us to determine whether our slitting machine could cut fiberglass thermoplastic UD (uni-directional) tape, a specialized composite made from continuous fiberglass and resins. We requested the client to send a roll of UD tape for testing.

As a professional slitting machine manufacturer in the flexible packaging sector, we identified that changing the blade material could make it suitable for prepreg tape.

Consequently, we customized the slitting blade with our supplier. The testing confirmed that the UD tape was cut perfectly with a neat surface and no fiber breakage.

This successful test marked Jota Machinery’s entry into the UD tape slitting machine market two decades ago.

In 2021, recognizing rapid market changes, we devised a new growth strategy for the company. As part of this strategy, we developed a first-generation fiberglass thermoplastic prepreg machine utilizing the hot-melt extrusion impregnation method.

The 1st-generation thermoplastic prepreg machine features an innovative second-floor platform design, with the extruder strategically positioned above the prepreg system.

This arrangement optimizes the casting dip molding process, ensuring superior impregnation and significantly reducing macula in the UD tape.

The up-extrusion design offers high-precision impregnation, aligning the impregnation width precisely with the roving distribution width, thereby minimizing waste when using edge trimmers.

This method is specifically effective for low-temperature resins such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE).

Our up-extrusion thermoplastic UD prepreg machine is capable of accommodating widths ranging from 300 mm to 1500 mm, producing UD tape with a fiberglass content of 60%-70% and a thickness of 0.2-0.3 mm.

In 2022, China National Building Material Co., Ltd. (CNBM) approached us to manufacture continuous fiber reinforced PA UD tape for automotive manufacturing.

In response, we developed a down-extrusion method where the extruder is strategically positioned along the impregnation prepreg line.

In 2023, we introduced a laboratory-scale thermoplastic carbon fiber prepreg machine utilizing the hot-melt extrusion impregnation method.
